24 Aug There's a whale in South Yarra

Guess who’s stopping traffic on Toorak Road? You guessed it, it’s our friend the Blissy whale!

As Spring approaches the response to the Blissy designs has been amazing.

Noah’s Aeroplane is an iconic Melbourne children’s wear shop at 42 Toorak Road that is currently featuring a Blissy kids window.

If you are a local keep an eye out for it.

If not visit our online store and snap up one of our gorgeous t-shirts for the smaller person in your life.

26 Jul The peas have it...

Keeping the kids entertained while I prepare dinner is a real challenge around here. There is so much activity and so many people looking for attention I find I need some real strategies in place to get food on the table! The other night we were having fresh peas with dinner and I was reminded of a very old school solution.

Kids love shelling peas, and it is actually really useful. They also enjoy eating food they have helped prepare so the trifecta is they get a tummy of green veggie goodness with dinner!

So give it a try mums and dads out there – a bag of fresh peas and you can’t go wrong!

27 Mar Caterpiller

My kids love themed play. We made use of the “how to make a caterpiller craft” on the back of the Blissy swing tags; using an egg carton, pipe-cleaners and a bit of creative imagination and paired it with a (few) readings(s) of Eric Carl’s The Very Hungry Caterpiller.

My 3 year old loved the counting, my 1 year old loved sticking her gorgeous little fingers in the holes and mummy loved the illustrations. My 5 year old enjoyed considering the existential nature of metamorphosis (actually she didn’t call it that!) Now, that’s what I call fun for the whole family…

08 Jan Jam drops

My kids love baking but organising a successful bake with a few kids around is harder than it looks!

The problem is finding a recipe that allows for meaningful (and equal!) contributions by my 5 year old and 3 year old! Arguing over who put the last cup of flour in can leave me as confused as them – plus our own little 1 year old Baby Bear likes to be involved and it can be hard keeping her out of danger while allowing her to get her gorgeously grubby hands into something that makes her feel part of it!

Today I found the answer – jam drops! I made the batter while the kids watched Playschool (thanks again ABC!) and then set them up at a floury kitchen table where they could make small balls, put an indent in the middle and spoon in the jam.

They had their own separate dough, container of jam and spoon (different colour jam for each child to colour code their cookies!). Baby Bear was able to sit up restrained in her booster seat and make patterns in the flour with a spoon and play with her own piece of batter.

Everyone was happy and the kids had a real sense of ownership when the jam drops emerged from the oven.

04 Jul Oragami Whale

Everyone loves the blissy whale, so why not make your own oragami variety? I find oragami a fun thing to do with my older preschooler. She needs a bit of help but loves the precision, the shiny paper and the results which she plays with for hours.

Take a square of paper and fold two opposite sides over so they meet.

Fold the tips over to meet at the middle.

Fold the paper along the centre fold and fold up the tail.

Make a short cut through the end of the tail and fold edges outwards.

You can draw eyes and fins if you like.

Hello Mr Whale!
